"Sensorially Challenged vol 1" out now

2/12/2017

First came those adverbs (courtesy, somehow, of me); then it was Lesley's Nonsense Challenge; now we have an Overload of the Senses, this time the brainchild of fantasy and sci-fi author Allen Ashley.

Like with all these writing challenges, it's yet another chance to break those so-called writing "rules", and is run by the inestimable and effervescent author Chris Fielden. This time, writers are invited to be as purple in their prose as they possibly can be. (If you want any proof as to the success of the project, just look at the cover of the resulting book...)

This time, all proceeds are going to the National Literacy Trust. With 100 tales from 100 authors, it's another fine purchase, and for a great cause too. Click on the page from Chris's website for the various links about where to buy.

(PS. My effort, entitled "A Tall Tale", is about an unexpected extra hit of caffeine one bleary-eyed morning. A quick confession: it is not completely inconceivable that buried within is a large kernel of truth.)

"To Hull & Back" - volume 3 - out now!

31/10/2017

Chris Fielden's gloriously bonkers, not to mention highly irreverent, competition for humorous short stories has now revved its way into its 4th year. Since on the whole there is little opportunity to see comic writing acknowledged and rewarded in this way, it's great to see this competition going from strength to strength.

I was fortunate enough to win the inaugural To Hull and Back competition in 2014, with my story "How Not To Undertake an Effective Time-and-Motion Study". Part of my prize was to be immortalised on The Hog (i.e. Chris's motorbike), on the front cover of the resulting anthology. (I've been jumping through that ring of fire for four years now. I must be getting bow-legged... as well as a trifle warm...)

This year I was privileged to be asked to join the judging panel. To say it was a tough call was an understatement - the shortlist consists of twenty very good (and funny) stories. Congratulations to Crystal Jeans, the overall winner - enjoy joining a very select club of Hog-Riders!

The anthology for the 2017 competition is out now. It also features a story from each of the judges, including my quirky romantic offering "The Arrow of Cupid (Goes Twang)", which was published by Storgy earlier this year. Take a look at Chris's competition page for the various links on Amazon, to buy as a paperbook book, Kindle file, or PDF.

"The Arrow of Cupid (Goes Twang)" published by Storgy

23/6/2017

I'm pleased to announce my first short story to be published in quite a while (at least, one which is significantly over 1000 words) - and make no mistake about it, this one is indeed a quirky specimen.

A God of Yore has returned. But did he ever go away? Click here to read.

Storgy are a very fine online literary magazine, containing not just a huge assortment of fiction, but also essays, book reviews, film reviews, and interviews - certainly enough to keep you entertained for many an hour (so do watch where your lunch breaks go... or if you're reading it on your phone whilst commuting, make sure you don't miss your stop...)

They are also raising £10,000 to support the families affected by the tragic fire at Grenfell Tower - please do consider donating - it's being funded through Just Giving. All details are here.

"Nonsensically Challenged Volume 1" out now

3/6/2017

Further to the wildly successful Not-Entirely-Serious Wantonly-Rule-Breaking Adverb Writing Challenge, and the resulting two anthologies (Volume 1 and Volume 2), here's the next book-of-a-challenge to feature. Which, rather than adverbs, is this time principally concerned with...

... nonsense!

This anthology, Nonsensically Challenged Volume 1, is a collection of the first 100 mini-stories submitted as part of "Lesley's Nifty Nib-Nibbling Nonsensical Narrative Challenge", to give it its full stupendously silly title. In partnership with the writer Lesley Truchet, this time writers were invited to be as daft or as surreal as they like, provided the story maintained a coherent plot and satisfying conclusion.

It's available as both a paperback and an eBook for your Kindle... and all profits are in aid of The Daisy Garland, a charity whose aim is to support lives affected by drug-resistant epilepsy. Click here for the dedicated page on Chris's website for details of where to buy.

So, do buy a copy... or preferably, more than one copy... and add some nonsense to your bookshelf and e-reader, for a very worthy cause.

(PS: Volume 2 is already chugging along apace...  everybody is welcome to unleash their Inner Silly and submit here.)

...and now "Adverbially Challenged Volume 2"!

30/3/2017

After the heartening success of the first "Adverbially Challenged" anthology (that's the book of the collective works of "Mike's Not-Entirely-Serious Wantonly-Rule-Breaking Adverb-Writing-Challenge", with the "Mike" in question being, somehow, me)...

...here we go again!

"Adverbially Challenged Volume 2" is now out in both paperback and as a Kindle eBook. That's 100 more adverb-packed mini-stories, this time generously donated by 72 writers, all in aid of the fabulous charity First Story.

Please do click through to the page on Chris Fielden's site and buy a paperback and/or eBook copy via any of the links available - or go direct to Amazon here - it's all in a great cause.

And if you don't already need a further reason: the stories are great, too. Who knew breaking writing "rules" could be so inventive and entertaining?

(PS: Volume 3 is already well underway! All writers are welcome to unleash their excess adverbs and submit here.)
